Street art, murals, installations, performance, fashion, skating, film and music take over the streets of old Accra for several days, drawing tens of thousands of people. It is free, it is chaotic, and it is one of the best cultural events in West Africa.
The name is Ghanaian Pidgin for the rubber flip-flops everyone wears - chale wote, which is also roughly “friend, let’s go”.
It has done a great deal to put contemporary Ghanaian art in front of both a domestic and an international audience, and to turn attention toward Jamestown as somewhere with a present rather than only a past.
